Lille was even awarded the impressive title of World Design Capital for 2020, honoring the one-of-a-kind architectural styles throughout the city. 

As far as architectural recommendations, we have a few. La Nouvelle Bourse, constructed in 1910, is a neo-Flemish bell tower. It is part of the Palais de la Bourse and is erected opposite the old 17th century stock exchange. The Roubaix Swimming Pool, built in 1927, is another must-see. The pool is housed within André Diligent Museum of Art and Industry, surrounded by statues and Art Deco displays. Plus, there is the façade of Notre-Dame de la Treille. This is a neo-gothic cathedral built with 100 slabs of marble and enormous stained glass windows.

La Braderie de Lille takes place every year during the first weekend of September and features more than 8,000 vendors selling clothes, books, antiques and more. The renowned event welcomes roughly 2 million visitors, and has grown in recent years to include concerts, rides, food stands and even a half-marathon!

You certainly don’t want to miss the 2023 market, which is scheduled for September 2nd and 3rd. La Braderie de Lille is an exceptional opportunity to delve into Lille’s traditions while partaking in unique festivities with friends and colivers.

The History of La Braderie de Lille

The roots of La Braderie de Lille can be traced back to the 12th century, stemming from Flemish fairs in the Middle Ages. The origin of the market is specifically linked to a secondhand fair that took place in the year 1127. The event repeated annually, gaining more and more popularity each year. Eventually, the market offered the opportunity for housekeepers and servants to sell their masters’ old clothes and possessions. This skyrocketed its popularity, as it became a way for the lower class to supplement their income. 

Throughout its history, the Braderie underwent several transformations, evolving both in its concept and presentation. Today, it is one of the largest gatherings in all of France. Its reputation is known far beyond France’s borders, and each year the market entertains both locals and visitors from all around the world. Steeped in tradition yet embracing modernity, La Braderie de Lille has earned its place as a cherished event that showcases the culture of Lille to the world.

Mussels & Fries

Central to La Braderie is the iconic dish of moules-frites, or mussels and fries. While the dish’s exact origins remain unclear, one theory suggests that repeated poultry epidemics led to a rise in popularity of mussels as a traditional food. Now, the menu at La Braderie is dominated by mussels and other traditional Flemish dishes, which always pair well with a refreshing beer. As part of the festivities, local restaurants take part in a unique challenge by piling emptied mussel shells outside their entrances. The restaurant that manages to build the tallest shell heap earns the distinction of being the festival’s top restaurant.

The Half-Marathon

The Braderie half-marathon kicks off the festivities and sets the stage for the whole weekend. As the sun rises on Saturday morning, tens of thousands of eager runners prepare to race. There are 3 different options – 5, 10 or 21 kilometer races – allowing runners of various levels to participate. The half-marathon started back in the 1980s and now attracts many international participants. It has become an essential part of the Braderie itinerary. After crossing the finish line, participants usually head straight for a plate of mussels and fries. • Reserve accommodation in advance. As there are many people traveling to Lille for La Braderie, it is wise to book something as soon as possible. If hotels are filling up, consider staying in a nearby city or even taking a train from Paris or Brussels. Use the official map

• You’ll want to get a hold of the official Braderie map, typically released a few weeks before the event. This map is a valuable resource with a layout of the market vendors, helping you pinpoint exactly which areas you want to visit.

The earlier, the better

• Just like any typical garage sale or fair, the first day at La Braderie is your best chance for top-notch deals. The selling kicks off around 8am on Saturday, but rumor has it that Friday evening might be the best time to secure quality bargains.

Prepare to walk

• Opt for your most comfortable walking shoes and leave your car, bike or scooter at home. The flea market spans an expansive area, with around 100 km of stands scattered throughout Lille. Be ready to walk!

Bring cash and be aware of pickpockets

• For smoother transactions with vendors, it’s advisable to carry cash. However, in bustling crowds, be vigilant about pickpockets and keep your valuables close to your body.

La Maillerie offers enticing options for dining and exciting weekend activities. Perhaps the most notable is Les Halles Biltoki, an enormous food market in the heart of town and conveniently close to our future coliving space. Les Halles Biltoki is a popular gathering spot for after-work drinks, happy hours, and leisurely brunches. The market features 25 independent food traders housed in a modern and spacious building, plus an inviting outdoor terrace. With such a diverse range of food vendors and places to relax, you can come to Les Halles in La Maillerie many times and always try something new.  

For beer drinkers, Brique House is the place for you. This beer house has a giant 800m2 taproom with an extensive selection of brews and a menu full of comfort food. They also have two beautiful terraces and a large rooftop, where you can drink and enjoy the sunshine in the summer. Brique House is know for crisp interior design paired with a laid-back atmosphere, and they hold special events in their spaces every week. We highly recommend grabbing a beer here and taking it easy with friends, family, or future colivers.

Most of us spend the summer juggling work pressure and vacation logistics, all while trying to squeeze in as much “me-time” as possible. Then, in the blink of an eye, the sun wanes and we find ourselves at the start of fall once again.

It marks the halfway point of the calendar year, a prime time to check-in on yourself and realign your intentions. We want to encourage you to unwind this summer, even if you’re pressed for time. Travel to Natural Destinations

Travel doesn’t always have to involve complex planning and expensive tickets. Sometimes a peaceful walk or day spent at the beach is all you need to decompress. There are many easy afternoon, one day or weekend trips that you can enjoy spontaneously with friends and colivers. To de-stress, we recommend forgoing city trips and instead embracing some local nature. Fresh air and scenic views are unmatched when it comes to putting your mind at ease.

• For our Valencia colivers, check out the springwater pools and lush mountains of Montanejos. Montanejos is 45 minutes by car from Valencia city and is great for sunbathing, swimming, hiking and rafting. If you don’t have a car, the Valencia Language Exchange frequently organizes group trips via bus.
• For our Madrid colivers, try the Hayedo de Montejo. Hayedo de Montejo is an expansive forest that makes up part of the European Beech Forests, which all together are declared a UNESCO World Hertiage Site. The forest has long walking paths underneath big beech trees, and is roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes from Madrid’s city center. Be sure to make a reservation before you go.
• For our Lille colivers, we suggest the Parc Naturel de Scarpe Escaut. This natural park is a haven of greenery and walking paths. The park was shaped by the Scarpe and Escaut rivers and now has zones of wetland, forest and farming. The journey from Lille to Parc Naturel de Scarpe Escaut is one hour by train or 30 minutes by car.

Make a Splash!

Ahh, water…the only true escape from the summer heat. Water is naturally comforting, and even just dipping your toes into the cool sea can help you feel less stressed. The sound of water is healing too – the crashing of waves, the current of a river, raindrops on a lake or even the soft splashes of a swimming pool. No matter where you go, taking a swim this summer is essential for your relaxation. Don’t be discouraged if you are landlocked or feel stuck in the city; there is always some type of water to be found. 

• Valencia: Patacona, Malvarrossa, or Cabanyal beach should do the trick. If you’re looking for a change of scenery, go to the end of Turia park and picnic in front of the sparkling lake. You can even rent a paddle boat! 
• Madrid: The Embalse de San Juan is known as “Madrid’s Beach.” It has over 14km of sand beach and is great for laying in the sun, swimming, or canoeing. You can go by bus, train or car – see your best transportation options here.
• Lille: Head to Dunkerque, 1 hour by train from Lille, for a classic beach day. Dunkerque is famous for Kitesurf, long beaches and big sand dunes. Here you will have plenty of space to stroll along the shore or take a dive into the refreshing water.

Open-Air Tango Classes

Moving your body is always a great way to unwind in the summertime. What better way to get moving than dancing Tango in the cool evening air? Every Sunday “La vieille Bourse Lille Tango” offers open-air Tango Classes amidst the regal arches of the Vieille Bourse Square. Classes are open to all levels and run from July 2nd to September 24th, 7:30PM to 11PM. The artistic environment is perfect for making new friends, connecting with knowledgable dance instructors and unleashing your inner creativity.

Bray-Dunes

Let’s hit the beach! Bray-Dunes, the northernmost point in all of France, is an ideal destination for a quick summer getaway. The area is made up of peaceful beaches and large sand dunes, with plenty of space to stroll, bike, or picnic. You can also explore the Reserve Naturelle Dune Marchand, a protected area known for its diverse wildlife and green vegetation. Bray-Dunes is an easy 55 minute car ride from Lille, or you can take a 30 minute train to Dunkerque followed by a free 50 minute bus.

La Deule Canal

La Deule is one of the oldest canals in Northern France. It is a calm waterway with almost no current, perfect for a breezy afternoon canal ride. First constructed in 1631, La Deule was modernized in the 1880s and now runs approximately 60km across the entire Hauts-de-France region. It is centrally positioned in Lille with proximity to the old town, the commercial port, and even modern sites like the Cita Parc amusement park. Les Nuits Secrètes Music Festival

For any live music fans out there, you know that summer music festivals are a must. Luckily, one of the biggest music festivals in all of France takes place just 1 hour outside of Lille. Les Nuits Secrètes Aulnoye-Aymeries is 3 days and 3 nights of French pop and electronic music. This year’s festival is scheduled for July 21st – 23rd and will feature artists like Angèle, Aime Simon, and Lomepal. The festival even offers cutting-edge camping accommodation with amenities like lockers, breakfast, phone charging stations and yoga classes.

The National Day of France

Mark your calendar for July 14th, the National Day of France! This holiday commemorates the Fête de la Fédération held on July 14th, 1790, which celebrated national unity after the French Revolution. Now, July 14th is a day of national pride filled with music, dancing, military parades, and fireworks. The holiday is proudly celebrated throughout the country, and Lille is no exception. There will be a traditional firework display at the Champs de Mars at 11pm – don’t miss out on the celebration!

Pickles offers vegan and veggie homemade street food during the day and plates to share during the night. They recommend pairing it with organic wine to provide you with the perfect taste. Although their second restaurant is new to the block, their name is well known in Lille, so you know the quality is there! The new restaurant is located only a 10-minute walk from Urban Campus Saint So’ Lille Coliving.

La Clairière

The place to be every Sunday for brunch is La Clairière. They have 100% vegan and organic food with zero palm oil. The bonus is, their menu choices are mainly gluten-free. Once you enter, you will notice a cozy ambiance and two beautiful dogs welcoming you to stay and enjoy yourself. By bus, La Clairière is only 10 minutes away from the coliving, very close to the city center. 

Itsy Bitsy

If you are looking for one of the most famous restaurant and vegan caterer in Lille, Itsy Bitsy is your spot! The restaurant was created by three young women who realized there were few vegan restaurants in Europe. They were inspired by mediterranean cuisine and indian spices which are surly reflected in their meals. Homemade, colourful delicious plates are presented by Itsy Bitsy daily. Want to try it out? Luckily, it’s not too far, only located 8-minutes away by bus from Urban Campus Lille Saint So’ Coliving. 

Annie’s Kitchen

Annie’s Kitchen is known for making French traditional dishes including, blanquette, tartare, and carbonnade into vegan dishes. The people rave over the results, they truly look like “meat dishes”! If you are in doubt have a “burger” you will not be disappointed!

De Rode Koe

We wanted to give you the history of how the name of a restaurant in Lille is called De Rode Koe, meaning Red Cow. The owners named it like that because in the past, they were farmers and they used to farm red cows (a particular breed). After having spent years in the farming industry, they decided to adapt their eating habits and in turn, take care of the animals. De Rode Koe, offers many delicious vegan meals, so they should definitely be on your radar!

Bistrot Saint So

During the week you will always find an afterwork event at Bistrot Saint So, but if going out during the week isn’t enough for you and you want more you are in for a treat. This bar located only a 10-minute walk from Lille Saint So’ Coliving has offers concerts and an array of parties on weekends with free entry.

Getting hungry while at Bistrot is not a problem, they offer homemade food with plenty of veggie options for you to choose from.

Looking for a local spot for your after work plans? Café Bellot is the place for you, and its only 10-minutes away from the coliving! Le Lovibond 

Le Lovibond is likely to provie you with that warm earthy feeling. Known to be such a welcoming bar with a very chic atmosphere and mezzanine to take it all in. Organic food, vegetables from the local market, numerous veggie options and best of all – local beers.

Paris le xx – Urban Campus has been welcoming its first tenants to the territory since February, in a completely renovated four-storey coliving residence, in the heart of Lille, Rue de Douai.

What are common spaces? 

Aside from having your newly renovated apartment, you will have access to 300 sqm of common areas. Why do we have this? What is included? 

There are plenty of things that are included in the monthly rental. For example; wifi and all utilities are included, meaning water, heating, and electricity – you won’t have to worry about it! Which gives our colivers peace of mind. The maintenance of your flats is also included, so if something happens you can tell our support team right away. Weekly cleaning of the common areas and monthly cleaning of your private unit is also included. If you wish to have the cleaning done bi-weekly, or once a week you can let our team know and an additional service charge will be added each month. The best part of “everything included” would definitely be the community events we hold. The activities our Head of Community puts together can vary every month, but they are designed for you to turn your neighbors from strangers into friends. The Christmas Market in Lille is one of the most beautiful in the Hauts-de-France region. This year it will be running from November 18th until December 30th. There is something truly special about the way the shops are decorated and building facades rise over the city. As their people say, “la joie de vivre” can be found everywhere during this time of year. So, if you are in the area, whether it be for tourism or to explore the city that your future coliving will be in, you will not want to miss passing through this wonderful market. 

As always, Lille’s Christmas Market is located in the lovely Place Rihour, in the heart of the historical center.

Every year approximately 90.000 visitors come to admire the beautiful lights and scenery.  So this is your chance to sip on the delicious, but very hot mulled-wine offered at almost every other booth to keep you warm throughout your stroll. You may even want to pair it with a toasty Belgian waffle to really get in the mood. 

Within the market, there are 90 chalets that offer an array of products. You can buy beautiful hand-crafted items that are both local and international to buy for your loved ones this holiday season. 

We recommend that you do not miss out on the experience of climbing to the top of the “Grand Roue” (Big Wheel), installed in the Grand Place (known as the main square of Lille). Once you reach the peak, you will see an incredible view of the whole town. 

For those of you who believe in the spirit of Christmas, head to Theatre square. There you will find the Santa Village, full of Christmas decor. 

If you are looking for a little more excitement, every Friday night while the market is on, the town organizes live concerts from 18 – 20H. Every year there are extra activities set up by the community members, however, most are surprises so you will have to go and check it out!
